My Story

 - Sharon Ericksen

A while back a friend of mine said that what I was creating wasn't really art.  Of course I disagreed but it made me think about what art is.  I have been a painter for most of my adult life, my art style was always Americana with lots of detail, so finding a passion for Acrylic Pour Painting and Mixed Media really was a unique experience for me as I am an orderly person...almost to an extreme.  If there is one thing Acrylic Pour Painting and Mixed Media can be called it is unpredictable and for detail person that could be stressful, but I find it amazing!

I am also a Music Director and it came to me that my job as Music Director was much like pour painting.

As a 'brush' painter I created exactly what I envisioned or felt, much like a composer would do with music.  They will take a thought or emotion and write it on paper with all the timings and harmonies to make it exactly as they imagined it in their heart.  A director, on the other hand, takes a piece of music and works with a choir or musical group to prepare a piece for presentation.  Sometimes one of the parts overpowers the other parts, sometimes the timing is a struggle and sometimes they are off beat, as a director you try to manipulate all the parts to create exactly what you see the piece being.  Sometimes a piece is spot on, sometimes it is a disaster...sometimes it touches your heart deeply and somethings you would like to just forget it.

This is how I see these unique art styles...  I start with a blank canvas, carefully choose the colors, thoughts and items, that best reflect what I imagine a piece looking like and then I manipulate it all to complete the creation.  Sometimes a piece is spot on, sometimes it is a disaster...sometimes it touches your heart deeply and somethings you would like to just forget it.

As a Music Director, I consider myself a musician, even if I am not writing, singing, or playing the music ... what is ultimately produced is music.  I consider myself an artist, even if I am not creating a detailed painting ... what is ultimately created is art.

One more thought I would like to share...one morning as I was listening to one of my favorite pieces of classical music, I was thinking about the parallel between art and music, when a design for a special piece came to me.  I decided that I would let music inspire many of my creations.  I look forward to seeing what music can inspire in an artistic  creation.  It also inspired the name of our company "Rhapsody in Blues", as I like to paint in blues, and a friend added "and other hues" to complete the thought!

                                                Blessings!
